Workplace Technology Devices

The Government of Canada launched the Workplace Technology Devices (WTD) initiative in April 2013, under the leadership of Shared Services Canada (SSC). SSC is transforming how the Government procures its workplace technology devices and related software, including security software, for over 90 in-scope organizations.

SSC is delivering on its mandate to consolidate these procurement activities, thereby improving security, reducing costs and improving service to Canadians.

SSC is also mandated to explore how support services, including help desk and desk-side information technology support, for WTDs can be modernized.

Activities

The first services operationalized under this initiative are WTD hardware and software provisioning services.

SSC plans to transform the delivery of WTDs over six years, from 2013 to 2019, by moving to a modern, enterprise service delivery model.

Benefits

This project is part of Economic Action Plan 2013, which projected annual savings of $8.7 million, beginning in 2014–2015. In the process, efficiencies will improve service delivery, strengthen the security of government information technology, support public service modernization and generate savings to taxpayers.

As part of its contribution to the technology pillar of Blueprint 2020, SSC is developing guidance for partner and client organizations to support the distribution of devices in a way that is fair, fiscally responsible and standardized across government. As a result, public servants will have greater flexibility to collaborate and connect with each other.
